*Beyond Performance* Teen Athlete Retreat: August 13
The Lever is a treadmill system that facilitates "body-weight support treadmill training": this means you can run/walk with lower body weight, lessening the overall load on your body during a workout. There are a few ways you can incorporate it:
maintain fitness while managing an injury (great for soft tissue injuries, like plantar fasciitis or "runner's knee");
rebuild load tolerance when returning to running after an injury (such as a stress fracture, where you may not have run for several weeks);
build volume with less total-body impact;
train at a faster speed but the same exertion or the same speed with lower exertion
recover from big efforts (hard workouts, peak race, double-run days)
Personal experience from Meg: She used it heavily over the winter while managing a hip injury. At first it was maxed-out (45 pounds off-weighted) for short easy runs; then the off-weight amount gradually lowered, the runs got longer and the intensity climbed. This allowed her to continue to training for her spring marathon (which ended up being her 2nd fastest time ever & a BQ!) while navigating some temporary limitations related to her hip. Now she incorporates 1-2 Lever runs per week regularly.
